JAKARTA, KOMPAS. com - The National Commission for Child Protection (Komnas PA), admonished Anggun, as the Goodwill Ambassador of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), for allowing her tour concert this year to be sponsored by a cigarette company. Anggun reacted by stating her position at the State Ministry Office of Women Empowerment, Jakarta, Friday.

As reported by the media, Komnas PA has stated their objection over Anggun's tour concert this year, which is sponsoded by a cigarette company, mainly because Anggun is the Goodwill Ambassador of FAO who bears the mission to fight famine and poverty, while cigarettes are one of the cause of poverty.

Reacting on Komnas PA's admonition, Anggun regrests the actions they've taken to express their objection. "They sent a letter to FAO, then to my management. Suddenly I receive a lot of letters from America and other countries. I wonder why Komnas PA didn't write to us first," said Anggun at the State Ministry Office of Women Empowerment.

"Have they ever seen me smoking? Even if other people smoke, I never asked them to. It's their choice of life-style. It's not my life-style. So if they'rea accusing me of promoting smoking, what's the proof? I'm not endorsed by a cigarette company personally. Almost all events in Indonesia are related with the cigarette industry. Even some sport events are sponsored by cigarette companies. The people can judge between what's good and bad," explained the Javanese woman with the full name of Anggun Cipta Sasmi.

Anggun confessed that she didn't know the details of her contract. She continued, I'm just the singer in the concert. She continued her confession that she had asked the sponsors to cut down on the cigarette promotions in the concert.

"Furthermore, the stage won't even have logos of cigarette brands, and the sponsor isn't related with the artist," said the mother of one. "If there's an event, my manager signs a contract with a local promotor. I've been contracted to perform in five concerts, so as a singer I have to honor the contract. But I have asked the cigarette company to cut down their promotion in my concert," she said.

According to Anggun, the admonition from Komnas PA is misdirected. "They're accusing the wrong party. And what hurts me is that being the FAO Goodwill Ambassador I've been tackled by my own nation. Though I've never given Indonesia reason to be ashamed. Maybe the admonition shouldn't be directed at us. But the rules should be changed. It's not our fault. They're blaming the wrong party," she said.

And again she protested, "Why must I be dragged down by Indonesia? In the future, I must be more careful. But, like I said, in Indonesia it's something ordinary," she concluded

Carl Lewis and Anggun named UN 'ambassadors'

Athletics legend Carl Lewis, Indonesian popstar Anggun C Sasmi, the Dominican Republic's first-lady Margarita Cedeno de Fernandez, French fashion designer Pierre Cardin, and Colombian singer Fanny Lu have been named by the UN food agency as goodwill ambassadors.

The Rome-based Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) is set to award the titles at a World Food Day ceremony Oct 16 in the Italian capital, FAO said.

Singer-songwriter Anggun, one of the first Asian artists to have broken on to the international music scene with her hit album Snow on the Sahara has campaigned for a wide range of social and environmental causes.

Cedeno de Fernandez, wife of Dominican Republic President Leonel Antonio Fernandez Reyna is being presented with the title of Extraordinary Ambassador in recognition of the 'numerous social development projects in food and agriculture she has undertaken in her own country and in particular those benefiting women'.

Cardin, who FAO described as one of the world's top stylists for both women and men, has initiated 'a large number of humanitarian projects and public campaigns notably for the victims of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster'.

Colombian singer Fanny Lu whose music has topped charts in Latin America for the past three years, has been active in promoting World Food Day and the FAO TeleFood campaign to fund micro-projects around the globe, the UN agency said.

This year's World Food Day theme, 'achieving food security in times of crisis', highlights the critical plight of 1.02 billion people who are currently malnourished and the increasingly critical need in the current depressed economic climate to assist the hungry'.

Fulfilling her promise to return to Indonesia with surprises, internationally renowned pop star Anggun Cipta Sasmi will finally rock her homeland this year - in what she calls "a phenomenally crazy road show".

Yesss, Anggun lovers: Get prepared. The 35-year-old diva will hold her biggest road show ever in Indonesia, entertaining her fans in five cities in August and November.

"This is something that I've been waiting for excitedly," Anggun said in Jakarta. "Many of my Indonesia fans were complaining and said 'mbak Anggun, why are your concerts always in Jakarta?'

"So this time, I'm so happy to be holding concerts in more cities,"

Anggun's concert tour will be divided in two phase, with the first to be held in August and the second in November. The first phase will consist of three concerts. The first will be on Aug. 1 at the Jogja Expo Center in Yogyakarta, with the second on Aug. 8 at the Hard Rock Hotel in Denpasar, Bali. The third concert will be on Aug. 13 at the Gramedia Expo in Surabaya.

After a two-month break, Anggun will hold her last two concerts, at the Sasana Ganesha in Bandung on Nov. 17 and at the Tiara Hotel in Medan on Nov. 20.

"Music, after all, has to embrace *the value* of democracy, too," Anggun said. "Concerts shouldn't only be held in Jakarta. They should also touch people in other cities, because music is for everyone."

Anggun's last concerts in Indonesia were in 2006, when she entertained her fans in Jakarta, Medan and Bandung. Anggun says that what will make this year's concerts different from her last ones is the way she is embracing the concept of "100 percent Indonesia". In her previous concerts, The star often took her French band with her onstage.

"This time, the concerts will be 100 percent Indonesia!" Anggun said with a smile. "The *supporting* singers, the musicians - all are from Indonesia, my country."

Anggun will be working with top composer Andi Ayunir, and will be sharing the stage with another Indonesian star in each show.

In Yogyakarta, for example, she will sing with Glenn Fredly, and in Bali, singer Rossa will accompany her onstage. The other singers scheduled to perform with Anggun are Pinkan Mambo, Bunga Citra Lestari and Ello.

"Why Ello? Simply because I love his songs. and well, he's cute," joked Anggun. "And for Glenn, we all know how great his vocal quality is."

As for BCL, Anggun described the younger singer as an all-round artiste - she is a talented actor and singer. "She's one of the most-wanted singers here now. I've heard a lot about her talent," Anggun said. "In fact, those artistes are the ones that I really like in the first place. They have such great *singing* quality."

In each 60-minute concert, Anggun will perform around 15 songs. Currently, she said, she's practicing the duets with her fellow singers.

"I want all of them to enjoy singing with me," said the mother of 18-month-old Kirana Cipta Montana Sasmi. "After all, the shows aren't only about me, but also about *me singing with them'," she humbly added.

Through the road show, Anggun wants to prove that despite her international success, she has never forgotten her homeland and loyal fans in Indonesia. But of course, she added, "it's not that I'm not popular anymore in other countries that I want to return *to Indonesia* this time. No, no, no. it's not like that," she laughed.

"Having concerts in Indonesia has been something that I've always been looking forward to. Indonesians are very enthusiastic about music; they're always excited about attending concerts," said Anggun, who had just returned from a tour of Russia

According to creative officer Indra Kurniawan from promoter Dytama, the concert tour hopes to attract about 10,000 audience members. The tickets, priced from Rp 350,000 to Rp 1 million, will be available in mid-July.

After Bali, Anggun will rock Surabaya, at Gramedia Expo on August 13. In Surabaya, Anggun will sing together with Pinkan Mambo.

Pop sensation Bunga Citra Lestari is still astounded she will be sharing the stage with world-class diva Anggun C. Sasmi in a concert.

"I can't believe I got such a chance to collaborate with Anggun in her concert," says the 26-year-old actress-turned-singer.

"I'm very honored and proud. It's a big challenge for me too, because I feel a bit nervous," she laughs.

Bunga will share the stage with Anggun during the diva's concert in Bandung, West Java, in November. Singers Glenn Fredly, Ello, Rossa and Pinkan Mambo will also collaborate with Anggun in other cities - Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Medan and Denpasar.

"Anggun has been my idol ever since I was in primary school. She's my inspiration," says the wife of Malaysian actor Ashraf Sinclair. "There are many things I can learn from her. Anggun just never forgets Indonesia despite her international reputation."

Bunga says she's preparing two songs for the big moment, but not alone.

"I'm still discussing the songs with mbak Anggun," she says.

And in the meantime, she has a lot of other work to do too.

JAKARTA: Singer Anggun C. Sasmi is taking a different approach for her upcoming concert tour – she plans to invite other singers to share the stage with her.

In a series of concerts scheduled to kick off in Yogyakarta on Aug. 1, the singer, who relaunched her singing career in France after her teen-rocker debut, will collaborate with different singers at each concert of the Anggun: Indonesia Road Show 2009.

“As a singer of the earlier generation, I am proud to see the quality of young singers in Indonesia,” Anggun said, as quoted by entertainment Website kapanlagi.com on Thursday.

In her opening show in Yogyakarta, she will perform with singer-songwriter Glenn Fredly. Rossa will accompany Anggun in Bali.

Other co-stars for the other shows include Pingkan Mambo in East Java’s Surabaya, Bunga Citra Lestari in West Java’s Bandung and Ello in North Sumatra’s Medan.

“BCL [Bunga Citra Lestari] is charming and offers a complete package,” Anggun said. “As for Ello, I just love his songs. Glenn is also a quality musician, as are Rossa and Pingkan [Mambo].”

This sentiment remains the centerpiece of the whole concept that inspires the entire production of Anggun’s “Phenomenally Crazy Tour” – as its heart and soul.

DYTAMA is committed to the biographical task of revealing the real magic behind the glamor and on-stage persona and translating that into an artistic expression that is entertaining, honest, and yet unique in spirits, not unlike the artist herself. And a concept of “Crazy & Phenomenal Biography From Anggun” was born.

The Pre-events will kick off on Saturday, June 13th 2009 naming Bali’s Hard Rock Hotel as its first stop (Sand Island arena). Followed by Gramedia Expo in Surabaya on the 20th then Anggun’s hometown of Jogjakarta would welcome its favorite songstress home at the Jogja Expo on the 1st of August 2009 before the production goes into a short recess, allowing Anggun some down time to recharge and reunite with loved ones.

The Road Show would pick up again on November 8th in Medan, and Bandung on the November 15th to complete the roundup.

On the warming up leg of the Tour, Anggun would collaborate with her compatriots, local musicians of the current domestic ‘soul sisters’ – Indonesia’s finest singers and performers-rising from the local scene - were natives of each appointed city – or are the current favorite such as : Pinkan Mambo and Gita Gutawa in Surabaya, Agnes Monica in Bali, Rossa in Medan, and Mulan & Mahadewi in Jogjakarta.

The duration of a set will be 60-minutes for Sand Island Bali and a minimum of 90-minute long set would be requested by the local venue operators (outside Bali’s Sand Island). Any later adjustments would be included on the event rundown that would be released within 2 (two) weeks before the event kick-off.

All throughout the performance, between songs, Anggun shall be narrating a brief monologue containing tidbits of her musical journey and the song repertoire naturally catalogues different arrays of songs from Anggun’s debut up to her last, Elevation.

Throughout her entire career, Anggun, has put her most faithful music enthusiasts first and foremost, they played a pivotal role in the whole orchestra that is Anggun’s career up to the present moment and remains as her central gravity.

The solo concert provides the perfect opportunity to annihilate that gap; and bring together the band of faithfuls, affectionately known as Anggunesians, who will be serenaded in 1,5 hours by their favorite singer, as a sign of mutual devotion. Indonesian Anggun may have turned a few musical stones in her illustrious career, but her newly-explored hip hop excursion – Elevation – is her proudest moment, yet.

DAVID Bowie is not one of the more covered artistes – not in the Americas nor Europe, and certainly not in Asia. So when Anggun Cipta Sasmi (or simply Anggun) decides to take on the Thin White Duke’s Life on Mars, it’s a bold statement of intent in wanting the listening audience to recognise her as much more than a run-of-the-mill artiste.

The 35-year-old Indonesian singer/songwriter of French citizenship was not an overnight success, and to a large extent, didn’t even need a cover song to gain recognition.
In fact, Anggun began her career as a child star, launching a recording career at the age of nine. They may have been children’s albums, but her continued presence in the industry says a lot about her ambitions.

With 10 albums tucked under her belt (a mix of Indonesian, French and English), Anggun is now pushing her 11th – Elevation – through the doors of the pressing plant.

“I wanted a word to translate the evolution of an artiste. An elevation is when you go to a higher place, when you’ve moved on to something, so that sums it up,” explains the stunning singer, about the title choice and musical direction for this new album during a recent interview in Kuala Lumpur.

Her breakthrough into the English market came in 1997 upon the release of the highly revered Snow on the Sahara. She remains a prolific artiste, having released four more English albums (Anggun, Chrysalis, Open Hearts and Luminescence) between then and now, all of which have solidified her career and garnered her the accolade of being the most successful Asian artiste in the international arena. The likes of Celine Dion and Sarah Brightman have covered her songs.

Completing Elevation was far from being a walk in the park, though. Anggun comes from an older musician’s work ethic of being a live performer first, so the trappings of the recording studio aren’t exactly the most conducive.

“It was difficult because I changed my musical theme this time around,” she says. Hip hop has had a stranglehold on the industry for a while now and Elevation necessitated the participation of French producers Tefa and Masta (whom Anggun collectively equates to American man-of-the-hour Timbaland).

“They approached me and I was very surprised. When I went to the studio, to my astonishment, there were no musicians whatsoever. All we had was a laptop with beat boxes, samplers and sequencers and such. So, it was difficult to write and sing to a blank canvas, to create an ambience or story.

“There is a beauty to this, though, because when you write with a guitar, there are certain things that you systematically go for. It was scary initially but after writing a few songs, I got the hang of it.”

And her pregnancy during the album simply compounded her fears of succeeding in this new environment.

“The hip hop crowd has a different work ethic. They are adventurous but seemed impossible to please. They were almost militant in their approach. I remember walking out in a huff once when they kept pressing me to sing in a certain way.

“When I returned to the studio the next day, they barricaded me in the live room with a chair placed behind the door,” laughs the doting mum of daughter Kirana. “It was certainly great working with them but they are a strange bunch ... they eat salads, don’t drink and call their mums everyday,” chuckles the amiable singer.

Elevation features numerous collaborations, with the aforementioned Tefa and Masta, French tribal-house producer and DJ Laurent Wolf (who was voted World’s Best DJ at the World Music Awards 2008) and The Fugees Pras Michel, among others. A sign of the times?

“I am always looking for that combination of what I can do with someone. I am very into fusing influences, sort of like making a cocktail, though I am aware that not everyone is keen on change.” Anggun quotes Chris Cornell’s recent collaboration with Timbaland as an example.

She stresses that it’s important for artiste and collaborator to stick to what they each believe in, “that way, you can make musical babies from the musical marriage”.

Citing a dream collaborator, the devout Nine Inch Nails fan would very much like to work with frontman Trent Reznor. “I think it’s his strangeness that strikes my fancy.”

Putting pen to paper comes naturally to some but with difficulty to others. Anggun feels that a certain degree of practice is in order. “I don’t feel I have reached a stage where I can create a story. I still find myself writing about my own experiences. Naturally, you take what’s inside you and what’s around you.” An interesting case in point is My Man, an ode to the stereotypical bad boy.

So why do women fall for bad boys, then? “If only I knew,” she responds sheepishly.

Though she considers herself environmentally-conscious, she concedes that it is difficult “to write about a dustbin”. Anggun would rather share her personal beliefs (like women’s rights) via an interview or debate, but while she feels music is entertainment, her songs are not necessarily about snapping fingers or tapping feet.

Motherhood has not dulled her ambition to succeed but juggling family and career has become a tricky proposition.

“As a working mother, I am torn between my daughter and my work. I suppose that’s natural. What’s most apparent to me now is I know I can’t afford to fall sick or worse. I have a real responsibility, something which I relish, though.”

And like every artiste worth his/her salt, Anggun honestly feels her crowning moment of glory is her current album, even if that sounds like a cliche.

“I have to humbly say that this is my best work so far, because I worked out of my comfort zone and truly surprised myself with the results. And the number of hours that went into the album also testify to how much I wanted all this to work,” she says on a parting note.

Illuminated Humanity School: School for the Rainbow Guardian

When Anggunesia visited Illuminated Humanity (a.k.a. Nurani Insani) School on Saturday, March, 28th, Mr. Dedi just arrived with his 18 students. “We’re back from Ragunan Zoo, accompanying these young lads whose got ranked 1st & 2nd on their class, a presents for them”, he said. After kissing Mr. Dedi & Mamih’s back palm (nick name for Mr. Dedi’s wife), all of 18 students from 9 different classes were dismissed.

Illuminated Humanity School is a school (or more precisely, a learning house) which founded by Mr. Dedi Rosadi with his wife about 4 years ago in Petamburan, western Jakarta. Consist of ten main teachers (volunteers) teaching 1 kindergarten class, 6 elementary classes, and thrice a week of 2 B & C program classes (same level with Junior & Senior High School). The building of the school is just like a boarding house piling with 6 classes, an office and toilet; in the middle of Jakarta’s very inner core.

Students here are coming from streets youngsters, (street singer and beggar) in Petamburan and its surroundings. But don’t dare to imagine students walking in and out school as their mood, neither studying nor dressed without discipline. Distinguished by Stop-by-House, this is a formal school. Each student uniformed, has a report book, examined, and certificates. The different aspect is, all of these are free of charge by the foundation; a sweet fruit from managers’ hard work, and virtue from the non persistent contributors.

More than just a school…

Illuminated Humanity School students derive from the most destitute children of town who came on 6.30 every morning with strong gut to learn. For them, this school is the second house where they can also bathing, eating or resting for a while after “working’ on the street after the school. Mr. Dedi and Mamih, with teachers here could be said their parents, where they can complain, asks; not to mentioned teachers here also do cook and bathing the children occasionally.
Despite with all of their visible limitations, just keep on your pity my friend! We’re proud with this school and we can make it! At least that’s the impression which Anggunesia could captured from the enthusiasm of Mr. Dedi and Mamih when they’re explain students ardor, and brought Anggunesia take a sneak peak within it. And indeed, their achievements could be competing with other established well-being schools. In this school, started from elementary 3rd grade, children provisioned cooking, barbering, and sewing skills. In order they can stand on their own, and not eternally on the street.
The sensitivity and regard on this foundation not hitting cul-de-sac just like that. The caretaker, with its very limiting budget, also loaning debt approximately IDR 300 thousand to students’ parents whose needed. Not for the sake of their food necessity, but for financial capital opening work. What a real micro-credit!

What do they need?
Now on, they really need money to prolong next year school building lease (IDR 15 million/year). School operational expense also needed. IDR 8 million/month with logistic cost during school inclusive both 15 bench sets and second-hand teaching gadgets. Open hands for every kind of compassionate acts; unsalaried pupil, food, books, clothing, money, or children entertainment efforts.

What can we do?
From Anggunesia discussion so far, we’re planning to held a birthday party on the school with 4-6th grade elementary students (around 50 children), and due to space and fund limits that we could collect; the form of agenda could be:
* Birthday blessing: whishing and cut the cake…
* Art performance from school children (they are used to perform…)
* Hospitable and friendly sing a song with Mr. Charles
* Interactive games between the children and Anggunesia
* Any other ideas?

Something really matter is all friends involvement…ideas, energy, and of course, the fund.

During a packed weeklong promotion tour for her new album Elevation in late January, Anggun Cipta Sasmi was “counting the days” for her return to her Paris home and daughter Kirana, now 14 months old. “But it’s just part of my work,” says the 34-year-old singer, who expects more visits to Indonesia this year in another role promoting dairy products for an osteoporosis education campaign. That professional attitude and work ethic took her from beret-wearing Indonesian teenage phenom to one of the most successful Asian entertainers in Europe (America has been a harder market to crack). Anggun attributes that initial success with her breakout hit Snow on the Sahara to timing, saying her voice and look met the criteria for the times. Still, she is clearly proud of how she has been embraced by her adopted homeland. “They respect that I have never lost my Indonesian qualities, but that I speak French even if the accent is always there. It’s exotic to them. And I think they’re touched that I really want to learn about the country and culture.”

After leaving Jakarta for such a long time, what changes do you see?
The numbers of parks in Jakarta are decreased, turned to malls. The pollution is getting worse by the carbon from old buses.

How far do you apply the green lifestyle?
I choose to use the eco-friendly products. It’s costly, but in France, the government gives tax credit for every purchase of these products. I’m also use to bike. Since my pregnancy, we changed our old car with hybrid car.

Nicolas Hulot Foundation did the right thing when pick you as their Green Ambassador, didn’t they?
I rather give voice to environment without the ‘ambassador’ label. To me, green is a lifestyle, not an obligation or because I’m pushed to do. Besides, as a user, I have a responsibility to give contribution for preservation of the earth.

What is your 2009 resolution?
Nothing. Generally, resolution merely stops there as a tradition, but the action is zero. It’s not the New Year that becomes the benchmark, but the increasing of age instead. I want to be a person who gets more patient to walk the process. There are lots of homework I must get done in 2009, including the album promo and concerts in Europe, Middle East, Asia and Australia.

How do you keep your stamina?
By putting into practice a healthy life. I drink high calcium milk, do yoga and pilates.

Do you still have time for self-indulgence?
I must! A bar of chocolate and a pair of new Christian Louboutin are my best stressful pills. Well, the latter one is expensive and I can’t recollect the numbers anymore for that’s too many. But purchasing shoes to me is an investment. What’s more, I rely on discounts, really!

What is the favorite weekend of your family?
Wake up late in the evening, and in bed having breakfast my husband cooks. There’s no electronics in our bedroom, so we play with Kirana all day long. When we get bored, we stroll down the park and buy bread. (*)

Absolutely. Usually I work with melodies, musicians. It is therefore in the studio with something similar to what we would have. Here, the approach was much colder because it takes a lot imagined from a sound or a loop of a sample. It was ultimately much more interesting. It's like when we want to make a melody on a piano, you do not get the same thing with a guitar. That is what I seek, finally, that it prompts me to do things that I do not usually do. Not only in terms of composition but also on how to raise your voice. Masta made me work until my feet hurt because I spent hours standing in the cabin. It is quite military, perhaps this school hip hop. This must be posed in a way perfect. It must be that there is nothing beyond. I've never worked like that all my life. Vocally, there were many challenges but I was delighted. It was like a revelation. When I listen to the album, it makes me happy because I discovered a new facet of myself. They were able to clarify some areas that had never been exploited before.

You wanted a color to the musical Nelly Furtado, to Timbaland. What Tefa and Masta have given to this color?

Actually, what interested me was the marriage, miscegenation. What I like about this album Nelly Furtado, was that his songs were always present but with a landscape much more modern and very sexy, finally. I am extremely proud of what sort of my album and I regret that many artists do not allow this musical adventure with other artists. So who do not belong to the same environment, not have the same cultural background. Fortunately we are not all the same, this is what is interesting. It is trying to do something together.

It is a way to break the variety of labels ...

Yes, but I learned this label French variety in France. When I released my first album, in the last century, it was pop with a bit of world music but I have been cataloged in the Fac radius French variety but I found myself with other artists the great variety. It's good, but it is very simplistic. Anyway whatever the title of the label is very simplistic and I do not do that because when I was in Indonesia, I was rock singer. I think a performer should be free and does not belong to a musical flag. Well, I do collaborations with DJ Cam, Tri Yan, the group Breton, I Muvrini or Zuchero, an Italian rocker, this allows me to m'élargir to me to the public by saying that I do not know sing in only one register.

And in the text, again, and Masta Tefa worked. To what extent are you aware of these texts here?

We talk about the rap better because in the texts, there are a lot of finesse. These rappers or slammeurs have a pen and write a very poignant that can be very subtle. They handle well puns. There are many more games of words in rap, much more than in pop or the variety of music and such, it requires a special writing. For this knowledge with Tefa and Masta and others, I was delighted. In fact, as English is not my first language, I am careful that the words flowing through my mouth are not interpreted differently or that we do not understand the meaning. And they use simple words, fair, direct but beautiful. And this is what I'm looking for a while. So there is this album full of songs that affect me as I would have never believed that my songs can touch me. This is a major art what they do.

You always passes through the same process, ie that you write in English?

Yes, I go with English because I think that I could not write in French and is not serious because I do not want to deprive me of all these talented people I've met so far . But it is important that I can write my ideas, whether in English or Indonesian, is what I most naturally. Then, these authors are working around the original idea or they do something totally different. That is what I like, too, is a song can have many faces, many lives. For example, Tunisiano wrote the song "Stronger." I like this way of writing very incisive but at the same time, it does not ring aggressive. I also like when Sako wrote "Nothing to write," there is a smooth almost feminine but with a restraint that only a man can bring success. There are a lot of finesse and richness that I finally discovered.

Your texts are very autobiographical as the song "Eden in her eyes" on your daughter. Obliged to write a song about your daughter?

Obliged. So I waited his arrival. And then it falls at the same time that my album is not trivial. I do not believe in coincidence or is God who walk in incognito. It is therefore something that marks this. So obviously there will be people who will say, even a singer who has just given birth and who wrote a song about his daughter. And yes, so what? It does not matter. So I am very happy to have made this song. In addition, my daughter has a small footprint inside with her little voice and every time I do listen to him, she looks at me and smiled, as she danced now. This is a moment for both of us is very personal.

In this album, there are several women, women in love, there is one that has been left, who is leaving. Is it important for you to be a multi-faceted woman?

It is important to say because my father was a writer. He always told me that when cell does not need this kind of a positive way, in written or audio. It is also very symbolic that the throw is on paper or on a partition, this means that we do more and therefore it can not hurt us. It is very important because the sad things must happen, it is necessary that your process of life as a woman and it makes you grow. So, as I am a singer, I write too. It is important to me that these songs exist, as a testimony to what I went through. It's beautiful.

You are involved in many battles such as micro-credit for women. It is also true that when listening, you give the impression of being a kind of Wonderwoman. Is it like what you see?

No, I just want to give another image of an Asian woman. In fact Asia is a corner of the world that is not known. And often, or on the hoax, or we see a pejorative side, in all cases a simplistic way. I just wanted to emphasize things that was meant or that it understands: Yes, we are all this but much more. We are women simply with another education, a way of seeing life differently too. We are much more fatalistic than you, surely. It was a way for men to see life much more smoothly, but that does not mean that we are not fighting. But I believe more in the power of softness that force alone, the force of aggression. I believe more in the power of the song, the melody because, as my father said, there are places where words can not touch, only melodies can go. I believe in that. I do not know if I am Wonderwoman. No, I'm not Wonderwoman, I am a woman, period.

You talk about your father, your daughter. The family is important to you. Are you the impression that the family of hip hop is just yours.

Oh, I do not know. I would. In any case, this family there Tefa and Masta, I enjoy very much. There. And finally, there are always stories of families and we do not choose but finally my friends, my family. It is the family that I have chosen, that I build. It's a bit like the person with whom I make my life and this is all part of the choices one makes in his adult life. It is very important these links, I am not someone solitaire. Like all Asians, we need world. That's right, it's very hip hop. I need my entourage.

And in your entourage are Pras of the Fugees ...

There are Pras of the Fugees are Sinik are Big Ali and I'm glad they were able to come, as with their generosity. You never know if a song, a universe or a name can attract another universe or another name. But now, whether there, I thank them.

How do you see the history of this album. Do you have a tour in preparation?

Yes, normally, I must turn from next spring. The album is due out also in all the territories where I had left my previous album, a twenty countries. And the history of this album, I do not know, it's not for me to write is public and this album, it must grow. In any case, I am impatient.

Anggun C. Sasmi: Reaching a whole new level

She stands out in the European music industry because of her Asian roots and the exotic Indonesian charm that distinguishes her from other beauties. But when Anggun Cipta Sasmi comes back to Asia, it is her international reputation that makes people notice.

No matter which way different audiences perceive Anggun, there is one thing they are all sure to observe: her talent.

This talent has taken Anggun all over the world, but has never taken her completely away from her homeland.

"I have lots of things to do in Indonesia this year," Anggun said, her voice brimming with excitement. "So just watch out for me!"

What is she up to?

"I'll be doing more work here -- promoting some brands and of course my new album," she said during her recent four-day visit to Jakarta.

But this time, things are different.

"Oh, I'm a mother now, you must have heard about that!"

Anggun's eyes sparkled as she spoke about her 13-month-old daughter Kirana Cipta Montana Sasmi.

"It's more complicated now if I have to leave home for several days. I don't want to take my daughter with me for some exhausting traveling, but I can't resist the longing I'd have for her."

Anggun, who turns 35 this year, is living in Paris again after spending several years in Montreal with her now former second husband Louis-Olivier Maury, a Canadian citizen. After her divorce from Maury in 2006, Anggun became engaged to 39-year-old French writer Cyril Montana. Kirana was born a year later.

"Kirana is just a mix of this and that when it comes to the culture we've introduced, especially the languages we've been using," Anggun said.

"Imagine this. Her father talks to her in French, her mother talks to her in Indonesian and her Filipino nanny talks to her in English with some weird accent!

"It's sometimes worrying to hear the nanny say things in her accent like, 'Kirana, eat your vegetabo-ol'. Well, she meant to say 'vegetable' but what if my daughter learns to pronounce it the wrong way?" Anggun laughed.

A therapist told Anggun that her daughter might have slow progress in learning how to talk because of her "exposure to languages".

"But I'm not worried because I was assured that my daughter would be more precise in using languages and is not going to speak like Cinta Laura," she joked, referring to a popular Indonesian soap-opera actress who speaks in mixed English-Indonesian with an undefined Western accent.

For Anggun, having a daughter has taken her to a higher level of life.

"I started working on my new album when I was expecting Kirana, and it was finished just after I gave birth to her," said Anggun, who breast-fed her baby for six months.

"I don't know why it was so easy to write songs during my pregnancy. The ups and downs that I had during that time inspired me a lot."

So Anggun seems to have had a good reason to call her fourth international album Elevation.

"It's like my autobiography," she said. "The title itself tells how I have risen to another level of life -- being a mother."

Collaborating with talented American vocalists Big Ali and Pras Michael, a member of The Refugees, Anggun enjoyed playing around with different musical genres to create her own signature style -- profound and poetic yet fun and playful.

"I made those songs like making Polaroid pictures -- the album is like a collection of snapshots of my life," she said.

Elevation has marked Anggun's success not only in elevating herself, but also in evolving into more than a pop icon.

As a fashion icon, Anggun has been associated with world-class fashion designers Dolce & Gabbana, Roberto Cavalli and Azzedine Alai. She was also appointed as ambassador for an environmental movement in France and as a United Nations spokeswoman for microcredit projects.

Soaring higher, Anggun made more pictures perfect when she secured lucrative endorsement deals with Swiss watchmaker Audemars Piguet, international hair care brand Pantene and New Zealand-based dairy company Anlene.

The last brand picked her over other famous Asian celebrities with international exposure such as Michelle Yeoh, but Anggun turned down the offer several times before finally signing.

"I don't really want to be involved in commercial jobs; I just want to sing. It's a big no for me just to put my face and body on some products," Anggun said.

"But I was assured my job would be to raise Indonesians' awareness of osteoporosis. I thought it is a silent disease, but no one cares enough about it. So after juggling with it in my mind for a while, I agreed to become an envoy for the brand."

With so many plans for her in the homeland, Anggun has promised to come back to Indonesia several times in 2009.

"I'll visit more places in Indonesia -- both small and big cities. You'll see me often, so I'll catch you later!"

Anggun, an underated french citizen, Indonesian singer who has achieve a superstar status in Europe, Asia and some parts of Africa,Russia and tiny impact in America has return with ‘Elevation’, her 5th full lenght album since her international debut album ‘Snow On The Sahara’(1997).

Unlike her previous album, ‘Elevation’ is observed as a carefully produced album in hope to not only capture interest and appeals to much wider listeners but at the same time able to maintain Anggun artistic style in almost all of her song. A similar effort made in ‘Loose’(2006) by Nelly Furtado.Unlike ‘Luminescence’, ‘Elevation’ is seen as an effort to gain a heavier radio and music videos air plays. Some older fans who are does want to let go Anggun’s Snow on Sahara image of dark,heavy, poetic songs might be dissapointed with this new album.

Not all songs in ‘Elevation’ are hiphop driven.Its not a hip hop album persay.Appropriately, i would say that ‘Elevation’ is a collection of an upbeat, midtempo and slowmo urban sounds with multiple musical varieties from pop, rap, dance, ballad, hiphop and even rock. All of these tracks still carries Anggun’s signature style in every facets of the song.The songs although not as poetic as her previous releases, its still on point in delivering messages without jeaopardising it artistic values and Anggun signature styles.Fans should know by now that Anggun is known to refuse to be associate with a specific musical genres. Over the years since the release of ‘Snow On The Sahara’, she enjoy expressing her creativity in many music genres.She does not tied herself with a specific sound, but prefer her lyrics and artistic inspiration to be the canvas of her work, which allows her experimenting with various musical genre in achieving her own signature sound style.Over this years,all of her albums are similarly carried her musical succesfully but they are not identical.

Anggun musical versatality is no stranger to her fans. She has collaborated with many musical talents from various musical genres such as Jazz, electronica, house, and back then in Indonesia she was a rock singer. ‘Open hearts’(2002), her 3rd album, is an urban pop electronica soundtrack album for the danish dogma movie of the same title.

After a few listens and looking through the progress of Anggun music, lyrical, image and style. I have to agree that this album has indeed appropriately titled as ‘Elevation’,as its proven eversince the released of ’Luminesence’ (2005), Anggun has succesfully elevate herself, her fashion style and songs and she is now more than ready for a much bigger opurtunity for her career’s development.She evolve into becoming an icon, securing expensive endorsement deal from Audemars Piguet, being associate with prominent fashion designer clothes as Azzedine Alai, Dolce & Gabbana,Roberto Cavalli etc.She also appointed as a United Nation spokesperson for Microcredit and is very supportive towards enviromental projects.

With ‘Elevation’ Anggun took a few bigger leaps forward to evolve her music and style. A move that i felt necessary in order please record label in order to gain profit for their investment and to explore Anggun creativity beyond her comfort zone. The results impressively displayed in all of her songs in ‘Elevation’.This album proves that Anggun can be playful and fun but still able to channel her artistic qualities.

This is important to ensure Anggun career longevity, she need to produced an album which will be celebrate by her existing fan based, and yet she must find her ways to capture new younger listeners to get to know her work. Those who are stranger to Anggun previous releases will slowly learns to appreciate her musical identity. Thus i truly welcome and enjoy ‘Elevation’ in hoping for a much bigger success to Anggun’s career, which something she desprately deserve and has been long overdue.

Im not going to review off all her songs in ’ Elevation’.Its all have a distinguish quality that you will have to appreciate yourself by buying the album. However, among all of her tracks, there are few fabulous songs that are unique, something that you least expected from Anggun but has a potential in becoming hits.

‘Crazy/Si Tu L’avoues’ - The first single off ‘Elevation’. This is an uptempo dance single that have a radio friendly appeal. For a single, ‘crazy’ proved that anggun able to compramise by having a song with a simple lyric such as ‘Crazy’. A love song about falling heads over heel to someone we love. “aint nobody else, im crazy for you, its all about you, everybody knows that im crazy for you, its all about you everything you do makes me crazy for you…” an simple addictive song to sing along to.

‘Sieze the moment/Hymne A la vie’ - Although the song has a slightly identical addictive intro beat to Justin Timberlake’s ‘My Love’ the overall composition is different. The background male vocals almost sounding like Timbaland. It is an addictive song with a simple yet meaningful lyrics which is a very classic Anggun.

‘My Man/Si Je T emmene’ Feat Pras Michel- In this uptempo song,Anggun collaborate with Pras Michel from The Fugees. It contains a catchy lyric and beat. A potential single song,which we might expected be release by Fergie or The Pussycat Dolls, Danity Kane, Kat Deluna etc. This female anthem song talks about Anggun telling her man, to stop the chasing game and focus on her if they wanted to be her man. “girls like me wont keep falling from a bad boys like you, thinking that you can be rocking my world, if you wanna be my man, quit the the game you playing’. I cant help but smile as i listen to this song, as i cant help but liking with the direction that Anggun is heading. This song proves that Anggun does not alienate her younger set of listeners and fans especially those in 12-20 years old who can easily relate to this type of song.

‘Stronger/Plus Forte’ Feat Big Ali - This is my most favourite song off this album.Its a potential single material and have all that it takes to attract new listeners. Its a powerful mesh up between rock and rap/rnb sound,a collaboration with Big Ali. I can feel the NYC atmosphere by listening to this song. Their vocals placing and delivery are both strongs. A dynamic collaboration that will give impact to the listener. This song can be a WWE background song. Or self empowerment anthem song.Something that Christina Aguilera similarly acheived in ‘Cant Hold Us Down’. ‘Stronger’ will elevate anyone’s mood whenever they are down or despair. ‘wanna shut me up?,wanna pull me down?, wanna scratch me up” go ahead and try. Wanna knock me out?wanna put me down? wanna kick me out? yes you can try.’ and the powerful verse from Big Ali “my family makes me stronger, the love makes me stronger, the hate makes me stronger,Anggun Come on!” . From my own test listen to few of my friends(male and female with majority of them are masculine male) who are not a fan of anggun fans; they love this song by just one listen.

Give to to Love/Cette Nuit’ - At the very first listen, this song has an almost identical beat to Timbaland’s ‘Give it To Me’. In fact, it has the same male background vocal in ‘Seize The Moment’. This is a sexy song from Anggun. Complete with Anggun’s seductive whispering voice.Something different than her other previous songs.

‘Hide and Run/Tentation’ - This song has a unique violin intro. Suiting the ‘running’ theme. It has a classical and urban feel with middle eastern influence, rich in texture with every layers of it sound. Addictive and unique at the same time. Something that you may expect to be release by American artist such as Gwen Stefani, Alicia Keys, and Shakira. “ i will chase you down, unless you say it all”

‘World, Un Jour Sur Terre ‘ - This midtempo song talks about teary situation of our enviroment. A challenges faced by our earth. The french version of this song is used as a theme song for the france version of the award winning documentary ‘Planet Earth’. A perfect song to end a perfect album such as ‘Elevation’.

Similar to her other releases. ‘Elevation’ also contains Anggun collaboration with world reknowned latest DJ to remixed her singles for club plays and urban radio. Laurent Wolf, Tomer G are among the invited list of Hip and talented DJ responsible to remix Anggun’s single for ‘Elevation’. This CD set includes their work as a bonus track to satisfy Anggun fans especially those who are into dance music.

In Summary, a lot of effort has been put by Anggun and her team to show progress in Anggun musical journey and at the same time trying to survive in the bitter and challenging music business, in order to make a record that will be recognize by the music industry worldwide,addicitively appealing to general masses and at the same time able to gain profit to invest in future album projects.

‘Elevation’ marked as the first album from Anggun that features American talented vocal collaborators such as Pras Micheal and Big Ali, although both of them are still relatively unknown and has yet making their personal significant impact in a American industry. We could see, how this album has been customize in such away esp it musical and lyrical composition is specificaly created to have a more American feeling to it. Big Ali for example, is an obvious calibre to American bigger talents as Wcley Jean and Elephant Man. While Akon couldve been a slide in for Pras Micheal. Nevertheless, Anggun couldnt have any better collaborator other than Big Ali and Pras Micheal. The result that both collaboration songs are still strong and impactful even without American bigger talents in.

Honestly, ‘Elevation’ is an interesting album. Something that we least expected from Anggun. I felt that this is Anggun begining of her new dimension in creative direction. Perhaps, If she able to secure a reliable American agency and local label to offer her an oppurtunity to expand her creative roots, We shall expect a bigger things in future. Who knows maybe staying there for one or two years will enable Anggun to expand and grow her creativity in a new perspective with the help from American producers and talented collaborators.

One cannot deny the fact that american culture is soluble compared to the european. We could easily identify an american made album with the european. Its the similar but not identical. For example, the lyrical texture are different. American album tend to have simple, street english that reflects the versatile culture there. European lyrics usually shakespeare like. ‘Elevation’ contain a balance between the two. Eventough Its less complicated than ‘Luminescence’ but still able to deliver it beautiful conotation. For example in ‘My Man’, “if you were my man, wont your drop your guns, hands in the air,you shoulve give up for once, so do you dare?” while the chorus “if you wanna be my man, youve got to seize the chasing game” which usually in America they usually put it as “youve got to cut the chasing game”. However, its a matter of preference, hopefully the listener dont find it awkward.

The only concerns is, ‘Elevation’ may not achieve a similar success and acceptance by France market as ‘Luminescence’. The french might take a longer time to accept an album with such “american” feel to it. Despite that, i believe this album will earn praises from fans and expert especially in Asia. No guarantee that it will find a major acceptance in America, but at least if the album is release and promoted in North America it surely give an oppurtunities for ‘Elevation’ to gain a much easier success and airplay elsewhere since Americans medias are easily accesible from every corner of the globe.

No matter what response will be receive for ’Elevation’, The album is now set to sail. Its up to you to purchase this album legally, and be your own judge. What matters to me is that ‘Elevation’ has proved to me that its an album crafted with tons of hard work and worth every cents i spent on it.

Its hope that, ‘Elevation’ does not only elevate Anggun creative versatality but able to elevate her fame, recognition and superstar status that she deserve to be.If ‘Luminescence’ sparks Anggun arrival to a much appealing charisma, ‘Elevation’ will surely elevate her even higher in hope for a global fame and recognition. This is by far her most commercialy appealing album to date, and i believe the best is yet to come.Just give her a chance.She wont let you down. I promise.

Anggun’s destiny has followed a musical, spiritual and geographic path. Her father, a writer, introduced her to the power of words and poetry. At an early age, dancing, singing and piano became her natural means of expression, and the stage an extension of her playgrounds.

Indonesia – her land of 13,000 islands – was captivated by her and watched her grow. A child mascot at first, she came to embody the fascination of her country’s youth for the West and the elation of rock. Her records sold by the million and her concerts filled stadia. Southeast Asia fell under her spell… but as the child became a woman, she was already dreaming of new horizons.

Crossing the ocean, finding the courage to start all over again… London first, then Paris and key meetings that would lead her to sign with a major French record company in 1997. The first fruit of this new life was “Au nom de la Lune” (the title of the international version was “Snow On The Sahara”), released in 1998. Her second album, “Désirs Contraires” (international version “Chrysalis”) came in 2000. Both were silken showcases for the singer’s voluptuous sensitivity.

She scored a significant success in France with “La Neige Au Sahara” (the most widely-played single on the radio in 1998) and a Double Gold for the album. More than thirty-five countries were conquered by her charm. America and its dreams were close. Her exotic soul tinted with a very French elegance was triumphantly received in Italy. The figures speak for themselves…

The first album was certified Triple Platinum Export (more than 900,000 copies sold), Double Platinum in Italy, Gold in France, Gold in Switzerland, Gold in Singapore, Gold in Finland, Platinum in Malaysia, Triple Platinum in Indonesia, etc. The album even entered the Billboard HeatSeekers Charts Top 20 in the USA! However, a total of nearly two million albums sold internationally in less than 5 years made Anggun one of the great French-speaking export success stories, up there with groups such as Air, Manu Chao and Daft Punk.

In certain Asian countries, her new life as a French citizen encouraged many young people to learn French, especially in her native Indonesia. Her success – not purely commercial, but cultural too – naturally won Anggun recognition at the Midem 2003 in January. In the presence of Jean-Jacques Aillagon, Minister of Culture, she received a Diamond Record for her sales outside France.

More recently, Anggun has featured on the original soundtracks of two Scandinavian films, “Anja & Viktor” and “Open Hearts”, produced by cult Danish production company “Dogma Films”. She was even nominated in the “Best Song” category at the 2003 Danish Film Awards for “Open Hearts”. A few months ago, her duet with Italian rock star Piero Pelù (“Amore Imaginato”) topped Italian playlists for 10 weeks running.

This year, Anggun has received the prestigious honour of Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres from the French Minister of Culture, in recognition of her international success and services to French culture. A short time ago, she agreed to act as a spokesperson for the United Nations in the field of targeted programmes aimed at eradicating underdevelopment.

A woman of two cultures, a messenger of musical fusion, Anggun is sometimes wounded by absence, but more often revitalised by adventure. She is unique in both her career and her talent. France welcomed her warmly and she opened her heart to the country. For her millions of fans, she conveys the image of a free woman, touched with the grace and complementarity of French and Asian culture.

After several years of absence, Anggun is finally back. Her first single, “Être Une Femme”, is surprising and explosive. With urban accents, a staccato rhythm and hard-hitting words, Anggun again weaves her spell in an unfamiliar area. “Être Une Femme” is the first single taken from “Luminescence”, her new album, scheduled for release in January 2005. It is a milestone record, featuring Tété, Lionel Florence, Jean Fauque and others, as well as a new version of “Être Une Femme”: a duet with Diam’s!
